Gilbert Stuart Back to American Reproductions  Gilbert Stuart, American, early 19th century. 4" wide scoop with fluted edge and ball motif, 22K gold leaf over red. This frame is named after Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), the most celebrated American portrait painter of his time. Stuart used this design, among others, to frame his commissioned paintings for the White House.
